Croydon Tramlink, June 2007

Tuesday 3 July 2007: A few images taken on the Elmers End to East Croydon section of the Croydon Tramlink. The tramway on this section mostly runs along the route the former South Eastern Railway Elmers End to Addiscombe branch, The SER branchline was operated as a conventional railway from July 1871 to 2 June 1997. Woodside Station still features the former SER station building towering above the line, the trams running underneath from 23 May 2000. Update: 2 July 2007. Pics added of another quicky jolly (mainly to pubs) on the western section of the Tramlink.

Thursday 8 March 2007: Well, the trip to the east Brum area went quite well, the sun shone for much of the day. Not being too familiar with the locations, we didn't really make the best of the light with it being very overhead for much of the day. When we got that bit right the trains we wanted to get went the wrong way around the Lea Marston/Whitacre triangle - there's always another day. King's Cross Signal Box Extension opens, 15 Sept 2006.

Friday 15 September 2006: Journalists and photographers are invited to join Network Rail's Route Director Dyan Crowther and First Capital Connect's Managing Director Elaine Holt to officially open the extended and refurbished King's Cross Power Signal Box. Network Rail has invested _3 million in the project which will allow Network Rail's signalling staff and First Capital Connect's controllers to be co-located in the same room. The new set-up will allow them to build on their excellent working relationship and to further combine their efforts in delivering good performance and a safe and reliable railway for passengers. Dyan Crowther said: "I am delighted to officially open the extended and refurbished King_s Cross Power Signal Box. This investment is a massive boost for the staff of Network Rail and First Capital Connect. They will be working in world class facilities, aiming to provide a world class service for passengers, who can travel knowing Network Rail and First Capital Connect are working side-by-side to keep the East Coast Main Line running smoothly". Elaine Holt said: "I am pleased to join Network Rail to open the King_s Cross Power Signal Box. This represents a large investment from Network Rail, resulting in greatly improved facilities for our staff, and it will enable First Capital Connect staff and Network Rail staff to work much closer together to deliver a more reliable train service to our customers". Work to extend and refurbish the signal box began on site in November last year and the project has been completed on time and on budget. The extended signal box now boasts new ergonomically designed workstations; a new fully equipped incident room; state-of-the-art telecommunication and I.T. facilities; and work is also continuing to gradually replace the existing signalling panels. All of the work was planned and carried out around the live signalling environment, avoiding the need to move staff and cause disruption to services. King's Cross Power Signal Box controls the signalling along the East Coast Main Line as far as Peterborough and is manned by a dedicated team of 20 signalling staff and 40 controllers. Silverlink Hackney Central Naming & Presentation: 31 May 2006

Wednesday 31 May 2006: Improvements completed on London's Forgotten Railway On what is often dubbed 'London_s Forgotten Railway', there was good reason to celebrate at Hackney Central on Wednesday 31 May 2006, with the completion of _120.000 worth of improvements to the station. This result of a partnership between the London Borough of Hackney and Silverlink Metro sees many changes, the more notable being LED Customer Information Screens, new & improved lighting, new seating, new & refurbished shelters and a new station entrance approach. After the unveiling of a plaque marking the improvements to the station by Silverlink Managing Director Mark Hopwood and The Mayor of Hackney Jules Pipe, it became the turn Silverlink Class 313 EMU, No. 313134 to step forward onto the stage to be named 'The Hackney Empire'. This well known London institution was recently subject to a _19m refurbishment and according to The Independent it is now _the finest example of Edwardian Music Hall in the country_. Having its name displayed on the side of a train can only heighten awareness of the venue to a wider audience along the entire North London Line. Following the naming, which was expertly squeezed in between regular service trains without a hiccup, No. 313134 now proudly displaying its new name, went on a tour of local lines. Several dozen dignitaries from Silverlink Metro, Hackney Council and the Hackney Empire were taken on a tour along the North London Line via Kensington Olympia to Clapham Junction and back. For many, this was a good opportunity to view the recent improvements on the route and to catch a brief glimpse of the extensive work connected with the second phase of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. The whole event demonstrated that Silverlink Metro and local councils are very keen to lift the profile of The North London Line away from that of a 'forgotten railway'. Chris Nevard
